From Marlow to the Bottle: How We Craft Our English White Wines

From Marlow to the Bottle- How We Craft Our English White Wines

In the heart of the Chiltern Hills, surrounded by rolling countryside and chalky soils, Marlow Valley Vineyard produces some of the finest English white wine in the region. With a focus on sustainability, quality, and local heritage, our vineyard tells a story in every bottle — from budburst in spring to the final cork.

This is the journey of how we make our English white wines, rooted in the land and spirit of Buckinghamshire.

The Ideal Setting for English Wine

Marlow Valley Vineyard is perfectly positioned to grow grapes suited to the UK’s cool climate, particularly the aromatic Bacchus grape, which has become a standout in the rise of Bacchus English wine. The vineyard benefits from south-facing slopes, excellent drainage, and just the right balance of sunlight and shelter — ideal for producing crisp, expressive white wines.

As a Buckinghamshire vineyard, we’re proud to contribute to a growing movement of local vineyards in the Chilterns focused on small-batch, high-quality wine.

Sustainable Vineyard Practices

Everything begins in the soil. Healthy vines produce healthy grapes, which is why our team works year-round to maintain a balanced ecosystem within the vineyard. Cover crops, minimal intervention, and low-impact farming techniques help us preserve biodiversity and protect the land for future generations.

Our goal is not just to make great Marlow wine, but to be responsible stewards of the land — something we believe adds to the integrity of our final product.

Growing the Bacchus Grape

At the heart of our process is the Bacchus white wine grape, known for its fresh acidity, elderflower notes, and green fruit character. Often called “England’s answer to Sauvignon Blanc,” Bacchus thrives in our vineyard’s chalky soils and cooler climate.

We closely monitor the growing season, paying attention to sugar and acid levels in the grapes to determine the perfect time for harvest — a vital step in producing the best English wines.

From Harvest to Press

Harvesting usually begins in early autumn, depending on weather conditions and grape maturity. Each bunch is handpicked to ensure only the best fruit makes it into the press. This attention to detail supports the clean, bright profile that defines our English white wine.

Once harvested, grapes are gently pressed and fermented at carefully controlled temperatures to preserve their delicate aromatics — particularly important for maintaining the signature qualities of our Bacchus English wine.

Bottling Local Quality

After fermentation, our wine is left to mature and stabilise before being bottled. This process for our Bacchus 300, from vine to bottle, all takes place at Marlow Valley Vineyard, ensuring that every decision reflects our commitment to craftsmanship and locality.

As a result, each bottle becomes a representation of not only the grape, but of Marlow itself — its microclimate, its soil, and the hands that worked the vines.

More Than a Bottle: A Local Story

While the UK wine industry continues to grow, it’s the boutique English vineyards like ours that are helping define its character. We’re not producing at industrial scale — we’re focusing on award-winning English wine with a sense of place and purpose.

Whether you’re planning to explore vineyard experiences in Buckinghamshire, searching for things to do in Marlow, or simply want to support local, our wines offer a unique taste of this beautiful part of the country.
